Training in Biomedical Acupuncture

The Acupuncture Foundation offers hands on training modules to health professionals

Overview

The overall aim of the programme is to offer comprehensive, safe and effective training in the use of Acupuncture techniques within a western scientific evidence based framework.

Modules will be offered on the management of pain, acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions, neurological pathways within the scope of professional practice. This is a skills based modular programme focusing on acupuncture dry needling, electro acupuncture, laser techniques within the scope of practice.

This course will offer health professionals an added dimension to their core skills within the scope of their own professional practice.

Scientific theories of acupuncture are emerging and have advanced understanding of this ancient therapy. The focus of the course will be evidence based western scientific approaches to acupuncture practice. Basic Traditional Chinese Philosophies and terms will be referenced, but will not be taught in depth.

Special features of the programme include the following:

  • A strong emphasis on clinical skills, clinical training begins in the second module and clinical skills are practiced continously throughout the programme.
  • An integrated curriculum where students gain knowledge and understanding of the science underpinning acupuncture from a biomedical perspective.
  • An emphasis on evidence based practice to improve patient outcomes.
  • Academic staff members teach in higher education and they are also practitioners. They are available to bring this expertise to link the theoretical and practical components of the programme.
